Trauma Service at SALHN
Flinders Medical Centre is the major trauma service in the Southern Adelaide Health Network and one of 4 designated trauma services in South Australia.
Flinders Medical Centre provides 24 hour full spectrum care to the critically and multi injured patient from initial presentation through to discharge and rehabilitation. Flinders Medical Centre is the designated obstetric trauma service for South Australia and has the ability to provide care to paediatric trauma patients within its service capability framework.
Trauma care at FMC is underpinned by the South Australian Trauma System Statewide Model of Care. The Model of Care is the first statewide model for trauma in South Australia and is the result of the collaboration and commitment of clinicians to improve trauma care in this State. It aims to ensure that every South Australian who suffers major trauma gets the right care at the right time. It provides a high-level model for trauma care throughout the patient journey and a framework for improving the delivery of care in South Australia.
The South Australian State Trauma Committee (SASTC) is the lead clinical governance body for trauma care in South Australia. Its principal role and function is to provide advice to the Chief Public Health Officer and the Executive Director, Quality, Information and Performance on state wide policy, clinical guidelines and strategy development for trauma care and to provide oversight of the South Australian trauma system.
The coordination and management of care of trauma patients at FMC is cross-divisional. The Trauma Service is operationally managed by the Emergency Department who provide 24/7 Trauma Consultant cover (Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine).
There is presently no admitting “trauma bed-card” at FMC and polytrauma patients are admitted to a variety of surgical and medical specialties based on their immediate clinical needs.
