New Acute Services Building
The Government has committed $572 million in funding towards the redevelopment of SALHN. The funding includes three separate initiatives:
- $498M State and Commonwealth Government joint funding agreement to upgrade and expand Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) (inclusive of complementary works at the Repat Health Precinct (RHP) and development of a full Business Case to support subsequent future investment in Southern Adelaide.
- $74M State Election Commitment at Noarlunga Hospital to deliver a brand-new 24-bed Mental Health Rehabilitation Service (as a component of the state’s +72 Metro Mental Health Beds; which includes The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) and Modbury Hospital) and a new additional 24-bed inpatient unit.
The upgrades and new builds at Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and Repat Health Precinct will deliver 228 additional beds and provide southern suburbs’ residents with better access to care in the south.
Most of the beds will be single rooms to improve patient privacy and infection control, with a mix of both overnight and same-day beds to meet the needs of more patients.
As part of the Southern Redevelopment – Stage 1 program of works, an Acute Services Building will be built at Flinders Medical Centre and deliver an additional 98 clinical spaces.
Once operational, the Acute Services Building will form the new main entrance for FMC and is expected to open early 2028.
The new Acute Services Building will consist of:
- Level 1 – Entry, lobby and cafe, along with a new day of surgery admissions area
- Level 2 – 18-bay medical day unit and new podiatry area
- Level 3 – four new operating theatres and recovery areas
- Level 4 – a dedicated floor for the FMC eye surgery clinic with procedure rooms and theatres
- Level 5 – a 16 bed intensive care unit and supporting CT scanner
- Level 6 and 7 – two 32 bed adult inpatient units.
The upgrade and expansion of FMC will also include upgrades to existing back-of-house facilities within the hospital, including an expansion of the main kitchen, sterilisation services and mortuary. Select engineering plant equipment will also be replaced to sustain the existing hospital and support the new services.
