Southern Redevelopment at SALHN - Stage 1

The Northern Entrance at Flinders Medical Centre is the main hospital entrance for the duration of the construction works – until early 2028.

The Southern Redevelopment - Stage 1 Program is a multi-year program of works.

At completion (in 2028), the program will deliver 14 new and modern places of care, transforming healthcare facilities across Southern Adelaide Local Health Network’s hospitals, providing the communities we serve with better access to vital healthcare.

Flinders Medical Centre is undergoing a major expansion and upgrade. This includes a seven-storey Acute Services Building which will provide an additional 98 clinical spaces.

The Acute Services Building is to be built out the front of Flinders Medical Centre’s old main entrance and once complete will become the new Main Entrance into the hospital.

Until early 2028 when the new Acute Service Building is expected to open, the Northern Entrance at Flinders Medical Centre is the main hospital entrance.

During the construction works, patient pick up and drop off is available via:

  • Immediate pick up and drop off drive through zone at the Northern Entrance; or
  • The Care (western multi-storey) Car Park, where you will be able to park for 30 minutes free. After 30 minutes standard parking fees will apply.

Overview of Southern Redevelopment – Stage 1 Program

  • Upgrade and expand Medical Imaging Services with a new CT and MRI suite on level 2 at FMC, delivered in September 2023.
  • A new 20-bed fast-track ward named the Marjorie Tripp Ward (Ward 2S). This ward was purpose-built to provide a new home for the existing Older Persons Assessment and Liaison/Residential Aged Care Outreach Team (OPAL/RCOT) service and opened in April 2024.
  • Brand new seven-storey Acute Services Building to deliver an additional 98 clinical spaces, including:

Level 1 – A new main entrance with enquiries desk, large lobby with seating, retail outlet and an undercover drop-off pick up zone, as well as a new Day of Surgery Admissions area.

Level 2 – 18-bay Medical Day Unit and new Podiatry area.

Level 3 – four new Operating Theatres and recovery areas.

Level 4 – a dedicated floor for the FMC Eye Surgery Clinic which will enable the integration of SALHN’s ophthalmology services into a single facility.

Level 5 – a 16 bed Intensive Care Unit and supporting CT scanner.

Level 6 and 7 – two 32 bed Adult Inpatient Units.

  • Mortuary uplift project to support the additional beds – completed October 2025.
  • Kitchen uplift project to support the additional beds.
  • Sterilisation services expansion project to support the additional beds.
  • Sustainment works - electrical infrastructure upgrade works to provide additional capacity and resilience for the site.

  • Expansion of Margaret Tobin Centre to include a brand-new 12-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) due to open March 2026.
  • The additional acute beds will better support those living in the southern community with complex mental illness, as well as improve ED flow and admissions.
  • The new unit will include therapeutic spaces that are open, spacious, light filled, comfortable, and domestic in style. It will also feature two wings with six beds each and three private family meeting rooms, one of which is connected to a private courtyard and can accommodate larger family gatherings.

  • 48 new beds opened November 2025, delivering:
    • 24-bed Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit, an addition to the mental health services already provided across our Local Health Network. It bridges the gap between our high acuity mental health services and our community-based Trevor Parry Centre. The unit showcases a modern, patient-focused design with adaptable spaces that support extended stays and create a home-like and recovery focused environment.
    • 24-bed General Medicine Ward includes 20 single patient rooms purposefully designed with an ensuite and a window allowing for natural light and a four-bed bay with a dedicated nurses’ station within the room, designed to support patients requiring a higher level of care and observation.
  • Kitchen and linen facilities expanded to support the additional beds.
  • New larger SA Pharmacy space was built to provide additional capacity and support the roll-out of Automated Dispensing Cabinets across the site.
  • 12-chair Renal Dialysis Unit opened in 2023 providing a new space for the service which increased capacity by 25%.

Repat Health Precinct (RHP) redevelopment has seen old heritage buildings transformed into new modern wards (majority of the beds single rooms to improve patient privacy and infection control, with a mix of both overnight and same-day beds delivered to meet the needs of our elderly patients). The two projects at RHP have delivered an additional 32-beds, including:

    • a purpose-designed 26-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit in a refurbished and expanded ward known as Torin Kowt Ward. Opened October 2024.
    • a newly refurbished 6-bed space for the Complex and Restorative (CARE) Service currently located within the Bangka Strait Ward. Opened April 2024 and is now known as the SA Urgent Care Hub – Repat.

Consumer engagement

An Aboriginal Stakeholder Reference Group (ASRG) was established as park of Southern Redevelopment – Stage 1. This group was established to ensure culturally appropriate and safe environments and practices are created within the new builds for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The group has provided valuable feedback to inform designs for the 48-bed expansion at Noarlunga Hospital as well as the Acute Services Building and Margaret Tobin Centre expansion at FMC.

Some of these design features include a yarning circle at both Noarlunga Hospital and FMC.

To create a welcoming and culturally safe environment for everyone, and to continue SALHN’s reconciliation journey, each unit at Noarlunga Hospital has also been given a Kaurna name:

Mukamuka Trrukungka Kuu > Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit

Minti Pirrki-Pirrki Kuu > General Medicine Ward

Kaurna names will also be provided for the new Margaret Tobin Centre Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and each ward/service within the new Acute Services Building.

The ASRG has also been instrumental in providing guidance and advice for artworks that are showcased throughout all new builds under Southern Redevelopment. These artworks are from local Aboriginal artists and connect to Country and are of local landscapes featuring native fauna and flora which has also inspired the colour palettes for each new facility.
