Medical Training - Flinders Medical Centre ICCU

The Intensive and Critical Care Unit at FMC is a busy tertiary centre, managing in excess of 2000 complex patient admissions per annum. In addition to operating as a general medical and surgical ICU, trainees can expect exposure to a diverse case-mix including liver transplant, complex cardiac surgery, ECMO, obstetrics, neurosurgery, trauma and a small paediatric group.

FMC ICCU provides a comprehensive training program, structured to meet the needs of medical staff at Resident, Registrar and Senior Registrar level. Dedicated time is rostered for teaching within the unit and the schedule is supervised on a weekly basis by a dedicated teaching Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine.

The FMC ICCU weekly teaching schedule includes:

  • CICM Primary exam- SAQ’s/viva practice
  • CICM Fellowship exam- SAQ’s/viva/hot-case practice
  • Clinically oriented intensive care lectures
  • Skill-based teaching
  • Case presentation
  • Journal club
  • General radiology review session
  • Multi-disciplinary simulation
  • Echocardiography session

All new junior medical staff are rostered to attend the 'Basic Assessment & Support in Intensive Care (BASIC)' course, led by the FMC ICCU Consultant group, prior to commencement of clinical duties within the unit.

FMC ICCU is accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) of Australia and New Zealand for foundation, core and transition training. The unit also provides suitable exposure to the sub-specialties of Cardiothoracic, Trauma and Neurological / Neurosurgery intensive care to meet CICM fellowship requirements. A number of Consultants at FMC ICCU have advanced qualifications in cardiac ultrasound and are CICM endorsed Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Assessors. They are available to mentor and assist trainees in order to achieve competency in Focused Cardiac Ultrasound in Intensive Care in line with CICM requirements.
