Oesophago-Gastric Surgical Unit at Flinders Medical Centre

The Oesophago-Gastric Surgical Unit is composed of surgeons who specialise in benign and malignant conditions that affect the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach and oesophagus.

These include surgery for:

  • oesophageal and gastric cancer
  • gastro-oesophageal reflux and hiatus hernia
  • oesophageal motility disorders
  • morbid obesity
  • and advanced laparoscopic procedures

The unit also manages acute general surgery problems, as well as more common abdominal surgical problems such as gallstones and groin and abdominal hernias.

Some obesity surgical services are provided in collaboration with members of the HPB unit.

All surgeons in the Oesophago-Gastric Surgical Unit also perform upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and some undertake advanced interventional endoscopy procedures such as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), ablation of Barrett’s oesophagus and endoscopic stents.

Members of the unit also oversee the Barrett’s OeSophagus Surveillance (BOSS) program for the Southern Adelaide region.
