Nephrology/Renal Services at Flinders Medical Centre
The Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) Renal Service provides for the diagnosis and management of all renal medical conditions, hypertension and electrolyte disorders.
Renal Service provides training for renal advanced trainees, basic physician trainees and has an active involvement with teaching of medical students. The Renal service has an active basic science and clinical research program.

- Monitoring and management of renal anaemia

- Peritoneal dialysis education and training

- Patients with acute kidney injury
- Patients with chronic kidney disease
- Patients on maintenance haemodialysis
- Patients on maintenance peritoneal dialysis
- Post renal transplant follow up
- Patients with metabolic renal disease

The Haemodialysis Unit provides dialysis for acute and chronic haemodialysis patients within Flinders Medical Centre (FMC).

Peritoneal Dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis is a home based renal replacement therapy whereby a tube is inserted into the abdomen. Fluid is flushed through this tube in order to undertake the dialysis. The dialysis process is undertaken by the patient or family/friends.
The Peritoneal Dialysis Unit offers training and support for patients undertaking both continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) within their own home. This service is provided for both metropolitan and country patients.
Services offered
- Education for patients and family/friends about peritoneal dialysis
- Initial training and ongoing support for patients undertaking peritoneal dialysis
- Inpatient assistance for peritoneal dialysis patients
- Support for patients from the country, including home visits and liaison with local doctor and nursing staff
- Community support to all peritoneal dialysis patients via phone and home visits
