Health and medical research - research ethics, evidence-based policy, current research, public access to research information, how to be involved
Why choose South Australia?
South Australia is home to world class researchers and clinical trial facilities making it an ideal location to conduct clinical trials. Clinical trials have been growing steadily in South Australia, outperforming the country on a per capita basis.
South Australia has centres of excellence existing through Adelaide BioMed City, South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy.
South Australia is also accelerating access to and participation in clinical trials for rural, regional and remote South Australians through the Australian Teletrial Program. SA Health has recently established the Australian Teletrial Program — South Australia (ATP-SA).
- No Investigational New Drug (IND) requirements
- Preclinical, Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 facilities
- World class infrastructure and expertise across all health conditions
- Large and diverse patient populations, including rural, regional and remote participants
- Ethics committees certified to approve all phases of clinical research
- Streamlined approval processes using Research GEMS.
Adelaide has an efficient regulatory approval framework in the Clinical Trials Notification (CTN) scheme administered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). This process eliminates the requirement for the Investigational New Drug (IND) requirements.
The Australian Government offers a Research and Development (R&D) tax incentive by providing up to 43.5% cashback for eligible R&D expenditure. Further information regarding this tax incentive can be found on the Australian Government Research and Development Tax Incentive page.
Clinical trials conducted in South Australia are compliant with the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guideline (ICH GCP E6 [R2]), as endorsed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Australia.
This means that Australian clinical trials are compliance with the current, internationally adopted, standard that applies to the design, conduct, recording and reporting of clinical trials.
