A salute to our nurses and midwives
01 May 2023
May is a big month for our organisation where we celebrate International Day of the Midwife (5 May 2023) and International Nurses Day (12 May 2023).
These recognition days allow us to shine a light on our nursing and midwifery staff at NALHN and the significant role they play in our healthcare community.
A heartfelt thank you to our nurses
Nurses are essential in our healthcare system as compassionate caregivers, skilled clinicians, and patient advocates. Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, they perform many roles, including assessing health, administering medication, coordinating care, educating patients, and offering emotional support.
Many of our nurses work in other important healthcare roles, such as research, administration, and governance. At NALHN, we are grateful to have a large, dedicated nursing staff who provide the safest and highest quality healthcare to our community daily.

Some time ago, we surveyed our nurses about why they love their jobs. Of course, we received many responses, but the two examples below were both memorable, and hint at why the quality of care our nursing staff delivers is so good.
“The privilege of helping people out at a most vulnerable time in their lives is one I hold in high regard.”
“I get to make an impact within my community and help to heal and care for people who can’t care for themselves.”
This year, three NALHN nurses have been chosen as finalists in the South Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards.
We will cheer them on at a function on International Nurses Day, and wish them all the best at the Excellence Awards which will bring down the curtain on the annual Nursing and Midwifery Week.
