Youth Treatment Orders

Drug dependency can have a devastating impact on young people, their futures and their families, and can have negative impacts on the broader community.

The Government of South Australia has established the Youth Treatment Orders program to help young people and their families address drug dependency through specialised treatment.

The Controlled Substances (Youth Treatment Orders) Amendment Act 2019 passed in Parliament and was assented to on 21 November 2019 and is yet to commence.

The new legislation will provide the option of Court ordered treatment for children and young people experiencing drug dependency. An Interagency Working Group has provided advice to the Government on a draft Model of Care to guide the implementation of the legislation. Community consultation on the draft Model of Care underpinning the program was completed in early 2021.  Findings from the consultation are being considered by the Government.
