Port Pirie Environmental Health Centre
Lead Smart guidelines developed by Port Pirie Environmental Health Centre to assist housing owners in Port Pirie to reduce lead exposure in the home.
Port Pirie, South Australia (located 230km north of Adelaide) is the location of one of the world’s largest primary lead and zinc smelters, and the third largest silver producer, which has been in continuous operation since 1889.
Over time airborne lead-contaminated dust produced during smelting operations has been transported by wind and deposited throughout the city, in houses and on properties. This environmental contamination is an ongoing source of lead exposure for the community.
There are many ways you can reduce or prevent your exposure to lead in Port Pirie. The Environmental Health Centreprovides important information about lead to families, especially those planning a family or those with young children.
