Healthy Pathways – a Cycling and Walking Program

Grant purposes:

To increase participation in physical activity, improve perception of mental wellbeing and increase social connection of people living in the Elliston district.

Target population:

Whole community of Kadina, Wallaroo, Moonta, Paskeville and surrounding districts.

External partner and their role:

Bike SA: to support in developing a range of encouragement and education programs that will seek to mitigate the core barriers to get more people riding. Bike SA will support provision of bike education instructors to deliver cycle proficiency and bike maintenance program, as well as work with community in identifying potential ride leaders, provide training and promote through the Rides Program.

West Coast Youth and Community Support (Mentally Fit EP): to develop programs aimed at young people in the district and will work with Council to deliver what the needs and wants of the community are following consultation with the young people.

Project overview:

Installation of a pump track along the coastal trail to provide Elliston District community increased access to a healthy recreational physical activity, focusing on cycling and walking for all ages, along with a complementary program of healthy lifestyle activities, events and workshops such as bike education workshops, mental health and resilience education. The track will comprise a combination of dirt and road materials, accommodating skill levels from beginner to intermediate and complementing the existing Elliston walking and cycling coastal trail which outskirts the township.
