Mental health support - COVID-19

It’s normal to feel stress and worry when there is a health event happening in the community that is affecting people’s wellbeing, such as the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

This can affect people through isolation from loved ones and usual supports, changes to normal daily routines, changes to or loss of work, difficult financial situations, as well as anxiety about becoming unwell.

To support the mental health of South Australians during this time we have established a Mental Health Support Network of services based locally in SA. This page provides information about the services and other resources for mental health support during this challenging time.

COVID-19 Mental Health Support Network

Through our Mental Health Support Network all South Australians can access the help they need when they need it through our network of specialist services.

The SA COVID-19 Mental Health Support Line can be accessed by calling 1800 632 753 or through online chat and is available 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday.

The Beyond Blue Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service can be accessed by calling 1800 512 348 or through online chat and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mental Health Emergency Triage Service

Urgent Mental Health Care Centre

The Urgent Mental Health Care Centre is a welcoming place for people experiencing a mental health crisis. It is a Neami National service, delivered in partnership with RI International and supported by SA Health and the Australian Government. The multi-disciplinary team support each person with their immediate mental and physical needs. Throughout the stay at the centre, guided by a Peer Support Worker, the team collaborate to enhance safety, ensure a comprehensive clinical and psychosocial assessment and to develop an initial care plan.

Care planning responds to the medical, personal and social factors that led to the mental health crisis and current presentation and feature:

  • assessment for diagnostic clarification and medication requirements
  • plans for managing psychosocial stressors including referrals to appropriate community support
  • communication with family and carers and any existing care teams or support
  • provision of self-help materials and referral to appropriate support groups
  • referrals to appropriate services for any escalated or follow-up care.

The SA COVID-19 Mental Health Support Line is operated by Uniting Communities mental health counsellors, who can:

  • provide counselling over the phone or via video calls or online chat
  • arrange referrals to a range of services
  • call you back if you leave a message
  • provide follow up calls to check in on you or someone else (with the person’s consent).

Beyond Blue Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Counsellors are available to talk to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on Beyond Blue’s dedicated coronavirus phone support line and webchat.

They will provide you with counselling and useful information to help support your mental health and wellbeing, based on your specific needs.

All sessions are one-on-one and confidential, and you can let them know if you’d like to remain anonymous.

ASKPEACE for CALD communities

ASKPEACE is available to provide mental health support to people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds living in South Australia who have been impacted by COVID-19.
ASKPEACE can arrange an interpreter to help understand your issues and concerns. Phone appointments can be booked outside of business hours to best suit your needs.

  • accept self-referrals and referrals from other government, non-government and community-based services
  • provide therapeutic work, case work, information, advocacy and referral services
  • are all senior practitioners who come from diverse backgrounds
  • speak many languages other than English and have access to certified interpreters
  • provide cultural consultancy support for service providers to assist in meeting the needs of the individual clients and their families
  • provide and/or support community education initiatives.

13YARN for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

13YARN is a national crisis support line for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping. People can yarn about their needs, worries or concerns in a culturally safe space and without judgement.

UnitingCare Wesley Bowden Resource Options and Support for Carers (ROSC)

Call (08) 8245 7196 or email to access or make a referral to this service. Available 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

UnitingCare Wesley Bowden provides support for carers (14 years and up) who are caring for an adult with a mental illness.

Carer Coordinators work closely with carers to discuss their specific needs and requirements and to develop an individual carer support plan. A Young Carers Coordinator works with carers aged 14 to 25 years. Support may include:

  • short term case management
  • information about mental illness
  • assistance with accessing services to support the person they are caring for, including support with NDIS applications
  • coordination and negotiation of services on their behalf
  • peer support groups
  • assistance to maintain their health, wellbeing and self-care (group and individual support)
  • direct referral to other carer support services.

Lived Experience Telephone Support Service (LETSS)

Available 5.00 pm to 11.30 pm, seven days a week (including public holidays).

The Lived Experience Telephone Support Service is operated by Skylight Mental Health. This service is available to all South Australians including people with mental health issues as well as their carers, family and friends, and is designed to provide information on mental health topics, navigation on the mental health system in Adelaide and real-time support. The trained Peer Workers, who callers will chat to, have a personal lived experience of recovery and managing challenges to their mental health or caring for someone with mental health challenges.

Regional Access provides free professional telephone and online counselling 24/7 for people 15 years and older living or working in regional South Australia

Affordable SA

Available 9.30 am to 8.00 pm, Monday to Thursday and 9.30 am to 4.30 pm Friday (except public holidays).

Affordable SA is operated by Salvation Army and can provide financial counselling, mental health support and material assistance. Financial counsellors can provide comprehensive financial counselling without the need for face to face meetings. In addition, a team of caseworkers are available to provide mental health support over the phone or via webinar. Caseworkers provide wrap-around support and have access to a range of psychologists who can also provide support to clients via phone or video calls. Growing Resilience

Parent Helpline

The Women's and Children's Health Network (WCHN) Parent Helpline provides telephone information and support for parents of children under the age of 12. The service is available at any time 7 days a week.
