COVID-19 vaccination
COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for everyone 5 years and older to help provide acquired immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
General practice plays a central role in the delivery of healthcare to the community.
Patients need the ability to continue to receive care from their usual GP, either in person or via telehealth, for general health care needs and mild COVID-19 symptoms, with support from the National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080.
To date, 99% of South Australians who have had COVID-19 have been able to remain safely in the community.
The role of GPs and primary care
The role of GPs and primary care in supporting patients under the statewide community COVID-19 model of care is to:
- support COVID-19 positive patients who are asymptomatic or have mild illness
- escalate patients who deteriorate with significant or severe illness
- support eligible COVID-19 positive patients to access treatments
- continue supporting COVID-19 positive patients through telehealth with non-COVID-19 health needs
- continue to offer preventative health care and vaccinations (including COVID-19 vaccination)
- conduct COVID-19 and respiratory tests in their clinic if it is safe and appropriate to do so.
