Registered nurses (RNs) are skilled professionals providing evidence-based, compassionate care in varied settings. RNs have the privilege of supporting patients, often at critical times in their lives.

The role of RNs

RNs are authorised to practice without supervision while being accountable and responsible for the provision of nursing care.

RNs work with patients and clients in hospitals, the community and residential settings. RNs have a central role in the healthcare team, assessing, planning, providing and evaluating care for people with acute, chronic and complex health conditions.

RNs practice in all clinical specialties and also work in education, management, research and policy roles.

Starting your career as an RN

To become an RN you must complete an undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing. Nursing degrees are a mix of theory, simulation lab work, and clinical placements in various settings.

To practice as an RN, you must apply to and be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Pathways into registered nursing

Aged Care workers (Cert 3 or 4) who wish to become ENs may be given credit for what is identified as prior learning. Please contact your preferred Registered Training Organisation to discuss your options.

With additional qualifications and training, you could become a Nurse Practitioner providing advanced, specialised care. RNs are also able to hold dual registration (as Registered Midwives) upon completion of a Bachelor of Midwifery degree.
