Bone Density Unit at Marion GP Plus

The Bone Density Unit performs bone density scans for people who are referred into the service, especially from the southern community.

Bone density testing is used to assess the strength of the bones and the probability of fracture in persons at risk for osteoporosis.

Bone Density Scan

A bone density scan is a simple and painless diagnostic test that is safe and uses low dose xrays to determine how dense or ‘thick’ your bones are. Images are taken of the spine and hip and occasionally forearm if required.

A bone density scan is a simple, painless and non-invasive procedure using an extremely low dose of radiation. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

Images acquired are sent to the Endocrinologist or Rheumatologist to be reported with results and images sent back to the referring doctor.

There is no specific preparation for the scan. No need to fast and patients can take medication as usual. Patients should wear comfortable clothing that has limited amount of metal on it.

The images are sent to the units Endocrinologist or Rheumatologist to be reported. The report and a copy of the scans are then forwarded to the referring doctor so results can be discussed with their patient.

Referrals

It is a legal requirement that a referral is presented for the scan to occur. Referrals must be from a General Practitioner or Medical Specialist.
