Port Augusta Hospital and Health Service works with local Aboriginal communities to improve their health and wellbeing through the Aboriginal Health Manager. We provide leadership, coordination and planning of Aboriginal health services, advise, inform and refer to mainstream services. We also provide health screening, diabetes care, counselling, and assist health workers to understand the needs and culture of the Aboriginal community.

Assistance and support can be provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who need an interpreter for medical, transport and social issues. The services of a traditional healer can be provided on request. Ask the nurse to contact the manager of Aboriginal Health for any of our services.

A liaison officer is available during the day Monday to Friday for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients who may require advice or assistance. Please let your nurse know and they will contact the liaison officer.

All ward areas including accident and emergency as well as the Step Down Unit and administration buildings are culturally blessed/cleansed at least once per year.
