Kangaroo Island Health Service provides acute services ranging from in-hospital care for adults and children by local general practitioners to specialist surgical, obstetrics, and outpatients.

Patients may commence their stay at Kangaroo Island Health Service but finish their care at one of the neighbouring hospitals with specialist medical or allied health input when required. All hospitals in the region work collaboratively to support the patient care needs of the region.

Kangaroo Island Community Outreach Nurse Practitioner Program

The Australian Government is funding a Kangaroo Island Community Outreach Program that is providing two Nurse Practitioner roles, which are being recruited and managed by the Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network.

The program will support the delivery of accessible, high-quality, patient-centred care, that is free.

Nurse Practitioners are Registered Nurses with the experience, expertise and authority to diagnose and treat people of all ages with a variety of acute or chronic health conditions.

They have completed, or in the case of Nurse Practitioner Candidates, nearly completed, additional university study at master’s degree level.

Nurse Practitioners are endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and are the most senior and independent clinical nurses in our health care system, with over 2,250 in Australia (30% working in rural and remote areas).

The Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Practitioner Candidate will be available to people with chronic and/or complex health and wellbeing needs, including those who, due to barriers, may currently not be accessing health services.

A Nurse Practitioner Candidate commenced on 5 September 2022 and recruitment of a Nurse Practitioner is still in progress.

We invite you to provide feedback on these roles via our online feedback form or by contacting our Nursing and Midwifery Advisor, Alice Steeb on 0466 944 067.

Kangaroo Island Health Service Master Plan

The Kangaroo Island Health Service Master Plan Summary Report will help guide the future development of health and aged care services at the Kangaroo Island Health Service.

The Master Plan explores a range of future service opportunities to meet the changing health needs of Kangaroo Island residents over the next 15 years.

The Kangaroo Island Health Advisory Council is a key stakeholder that has driven the master planning process, providing a major funding contribution of $40,000 towards its development, coordinating community consultation.

The Master Plan proposes staged expansion and redevelopment opportunities to the current hospital, including new build projects to increase ambulatory and aged care services that will help deliver care closer to home.

In developing the Master Plan, we worked together with the community and clinicians to ensure we designed a health service that is tailored to meet the growing health and aged care needs of Kangaroo Island residents, now and into the future.
