Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) is the southern area's largest hospital providing medical services for the southern population of Adelaide and major regional rural centres. 

FMC is a public teaching hospital co-located with the Flinders University and Flinders Private Hospital. The FMC Foundation is the fundraising arm of the hospital.

Emergency Department

The FMC Emergency Department is open 24 hours, seven days a week.

The department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. It is the obstetric trauma centre for South Australia and a designated state trauma centre. 

Location:  Level 3 FMC, accessed via the lifts on Level 2 (opposite Northern Entrance) and from Level 2 of the multi-storey carpark. 

The department can also be accessed via the Emergency Ramp located off Service Road. Please follow the signs. A set down and pick up area for approximately three vehicles is available outside the entrance door.

  • If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 000 and ask for the ambulance service
  • If you are unsure as to whether you need to attend hospital, please contact Health Direct on 1800 022 222 where you will be able to speak with a Registered Nurse
  • Please be aware that no South Australian public hospital, including FMC, will give out medical advice over the phone

Visiting hours

Cardiac Care Unit

10.00 am to 8.00 pm

Intensive and Critical Care Unit

Visitors are encouraged to come between 1.00 pm and 9.00 pm. However, visiting can be at any hour depending on the condition of the patient.

Margaret Tobin Centre

Weekdays: 9.00 am to 8.30 pm for Wards 5H and 5K (public holidays 10.00 am to 12 noon)

2.00 pm to 5.00 pm for Ward 5J (public holidays 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm)

Weekends: 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm for all wards.

Please note: visiting outside of these hours is at the discretion of the senior nurse on duty. However, in the interest of the wellbeing of patients, nursing staff may restrict visiting.

Neonatal Unit

Visiting needs to be approved by parents. 

Parents and brothers and sisters of the baby can visit at any time. Quiet time in the unit is between 12.00 noon and 3.00 pm, when the lights are dimmed to help babies rest. 

The unit is closed to all parents and visitors between 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm on Fridays to allow the medical consultants time to discuss complex patients in depth.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Visiting hours are 3.00 pm to 8.00 pm. A visitor-free rest period is encouraged for post natal mothers between 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm.

Variety Children's Centre (paediatric ward)

Open visiting hours for parents, carers and grandparents. Other visitors are welcome from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm.

Other wards

10.00 am to 8.30 pm daily.

Nursing staff may restrict visiting in the interest of the patient's wellbeing. Visiting outside of the above hours is at the senior nurse's discretion. 

Please note: Some wards encourage a rest time for patients after lunch until 3.00 pm.

Children visiting must be directly supervised by an adult at all times.

Private patients

At Flinders Medical Centre you can choose to be admitted as a private patient. Admission as a private patient has benefits for both you and the hospital. 

Patient entertainment

Bedside computers have now been installed and are fully operational for patient entertainment at Flinders.

The bedside entertainment services are provided by Telstra and give patients access to a number of different entertainment options on a pre-paid basis.

Entertainment packages

Car parking

There is a 10 minute pick-up and drop-off zone at the main entrance of the hospital. For longer periods, parking is available in Wilson’s multi-storey car park, located next to the main entrance of the hospital. The southern car park is also available for patients and families visiting the Rehabilitation and Palliative Care Building and the Older Persons' Mental Health Unit. Fees apply and you must pay at the AutoPay stations before leaving.

Limited two hour on-street car parking is available on Flinders Drive (the main road in front of the hospital). Parts of this road are quite steep. Please note that this area is regularly patrolled by local council parking inspectors.

Bicycle racks can be found near the main entrance of the hospital, near the multi-storey car park entrance.

Car parking fees 

Car parking fees have been implemented at our hospital. More information including fees and exemptions are available on the metropolitan hospitals car parking page.

Please note exemptions listed on this page do not apply to Flinders Medical Centre. Please contact the Flinders Medical Centre car parking officer for exemptions at our site.

Disabled access

FMC is fully accessible for wheelchairs. Lifts are situated inside the main entrance and throughout the hospital.  A ramp is available at the Northern Entrance (opposite the multi-storey car park).

Car parking spaces for people holding disability permits can be found:

  • in the multi-storey car park (designated Disability Permit parks are located near the lifts on Level 2; or drivers can use any available car parking space) and the southern carpark
  • Level 4 Southern Entrance
  • just past the main entrance of the hospital, facing the creek area
  • on Flinders Drive, further down from the main entrance

A 10-minute set-down space is also available under the verandah at the main entrance of the hospital.
