What study do I need to do?


You can become an allied health assistant through vocational education and on-the-job training. For those seeking specialist allied health careers, university study is required.

Entry level Allied Health Assistants (AHAs)

AHAs work under the direction of an Allied Health Professional (AHP) to support client programs as well as provide administrative support. You can become an AHA through on the job training, while you complete cert 3 or 4 level study through a provider like Tafe.

Even without relevant training or experience, you can apply to be part of our YNLHN AHA casual pool:

Successful applicants will gain on-the-job training and start their qualifications.

Allied Health Professional (AHP)

If you want a specialised career, such as physiotherapist or speech pathologist, you need to complete a university degree. There are many options that allow you to study locally.

Uni Hub Spencer Gulf have teams in Port Pirie and Kadina who can help you find the right course and apply. They can provide a variety of local student assistance including a quiet place to study.

Flinders University now offer allied health degrees (speech pathology, occupational therapy and physiotherapy) in traditional face-to-face classes at the Uni Hub’s Port Pirie University Centre from 2024.

YNLHN Allied Health Cadetship Program

The YNLHN Allied Health Cadetship program provides local residents who are studying allied health qualifications employment at a YNLHN health service during and on completion of their studies.
The overall aims of the program are to:

  • Grow our own allied health workforce, targeting local students and job seekers to improve recruitment and retention of staff in the network
  • Provide reliable and quality allied health services to the YNLHN community

Allied Health students on placement at YNLHN will have access to an allied health clinical educator and placement support officer for interdisciplinary and administrative support.
