Recall of Pasadena Foodland Hot Cross Buns

Monday, 8 April 2019

South Australian company the Chapley Group, which operates Pasadena Foodland, has identified the foreign matter that contaminated a number of hot cross bun products was a small calculator.

The company yesterday initiated a recall of a number of products packaged on 7 April 2019, following a customer complaint to the business about plastic in a product.

SA Health’s Acting Chief Public Health Officer, Dr Chris Lease, said the recall was precautionary and there had been no reports of harm or injury.

“The concern with a calculator is that it contains a button battery which, if swallowed, can cause serious injury or even death,” Dr Lease said.

“The Chapley Group is proactively working with SA Health and Food Standards Australia-New Zealand to notify customers who may have purchased the affected products.

“We urge anyone who may have purchased the affected hot cross buns check the ‘packed on’ date, not to consume them, and return them to Pasadena Foodland for a full refund.”

The recall includes the following products that were produced on 7 April, 2019:

  • Choc Chip Hot Cross Buns 6 pack
  • Cranberry and White Choc Hot Cross Buns 6 pack
  • Hot Cross Buns 6 pack
  • Hot Cross Buns Large Loose
  • Hot Cross Buns Fruitless 6 pack
  • Mini Hot Cross Buns 12 pack
  • Mini Choc Chip Hot Cross Buns 12 pack
  • Premium Hot Cross Buns 500g
  • Various weights, 6 or 12 in a pack, packed on 7 April 2019

These products were available at Pasadena Foodland and were produced on 7 April 2019. No other Pasadena Foodland bakery products are affected by the recall.

The exact circumstances surrounding how a calculator ended up in a batch of hot cross bun dough is still being investigated, but there is no evidence of a deliberate act. For more information, contact the Chapley Group on 8374 5000.
