Palliative Care 2022 Grants Program

The State Government remains committed to improve and diversify quality palliative care options in South Australia.

The Palliative Care 2022 Grants Program focused on the remaining priorities from the report Statewide Assessment of Palliative Care Needs (PDF 692KB), and areas of unmet need identified both in the National Palliative Care Strategy 2018 and the SA Palliative Care Strategic Framework 2022-27:

  1. Improve palliative care data collection, monitoring and reporting
  2. Extend palliative care support to patients and practitioners treating non-malignant diseases
  3. Improve access to palliative care in the community (including grief and bereavement)
  4. Increase the number and involvement of primary care practitioners in palliative care.

For the 2022 round a total of $876,000 was available to non-governmental organisations working with or interested in trailing projects on palliative care. Applications opened between 21 February and 20 March 2022, with funding of up to $75,000 available per project.

The Grants Review Panel was impressed with the quality of the applications, which highlighted important services and areas of unmet need in palliative care across the state.

Background

From 2018-2019 to 2021-2022 the State Government has invested $16 million to improve support to people in the final stages of their life by:

  • expanding palliative care models in local health networks from a 5-day to a 7-day model
  • establishing the Statewide Palliative Care Clinical Network
  • delivering a report with a Statewide Assessment of Palliative Care Needs, highlighting the factors that will contribute to the way that people in South Australia will require palliative care
  • agreeing and implementing the Comprehensive Palliative Care in Aged Care project, in partnership with the Commonwealth Government.
