Non-government organisation mental health services

SA Health provides a range of psychosocial support programs which are generally delivered by non-government organisations (NGO).

Psychosocial support services are non-clinical and recovery-oriented services delivered in the community and tailored to individual needs. They support people experiencing mental health conditions to live independently and safely in the community.

SA Health has made some changes to psychosocial support services to better meet the needs of South Australians with mental health conditions, their carers and families, and communities.

Referrals to these programs must be made by Local Health Network mental health services including emergency departments and hospital inpatient units and can also be made by the Urgent Mental Health Care Centre.

Under the new arrangements, there are two new psychosocial services available which are delivered on a one on one basis:

Intensive Crisis Support - up to 6 weeks for people generally aged between 16 to 64 years.
Non-Acute Psychosocial Support - up to 4 months for people generally aged 16 to 64 years (with the possibility of extension up to 12 months with approval).

People over the age of 65 years who havenot been able to access supports through the Aged Care system or National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will also be eligible for this program.

These services assist people with mental health conditions in their rehabilitation and recovery by supporting them to:

build day to day living skills;
enhance relationships, social participation and inclusion;
access and maintain safe and secure housing;
access education, training and employment opportunities;
navigate the health and mental health systems; and
access the NDIS and other relevant services.

The new psychosocial services commenced on 1 March 2024 and replace the previously funded programs of Intensive Home-Based Support Services, Individual Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Support Services, Housing and Accommodation Support Partnership and GP Access programs.
