About Disasters And Mental Health Support

Every year Australian communities face the devastating effects of disasters such as:

  • bushfires
  • floods
  • storms
  • pandemics
  • community violence and other major disasters.

These events can have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of communities, the economy, local infrastructure and the environment. It is also important to recognise the existing strength and resilience of communities that helps people to bounce back in times of crisis.

This site provides access to mental health information to assist with supporting people and communities at risk of, or affected by, major incidents. It aims to ensure services and communities are well prepared and understand how to access mental health supports quickly if a major incident occurs.

Mental Health Impacts Of Disasters

It is common for people to experience stress and grief after a major incident. Sometimes the impact is obvious straight away but often it's a slow process & can have a longer term impact. In addition to the trauma of the incident itself, it is important to consider the broader impacts on the emotional wellbeing and functioning of individuals and communities. This may include:

  • loss of loved ones
  • financial stressors
  • social isolation
  • relationship difficulties
  • displacement
  • loss of possessions
  • Impact on employment, business and livelihood.
