Internship at SALHN has a strong focus on trainee wellbeing, with frequent and close contact with the MEU, for example with regular Nights and Medical Emergency Team (MET) debriefs, feedback sessions with the DCT, and mid- and end-of-year intern interviews.

At SALHN, we're dedicated to nurturing early career trainee medical officers (TMOs), also known as Resident Medical Officers (RMOs).
Our network offers a range of prevocational programs designed to guide you in shaping your career path.
These programs help you make informed decisions, acquire essential skills, gain valuable experience, and bolster your CV, preparing you for entry into specialised training programs. Our prevocational programs are suitable for individuals with Postgraduate Year 2 and above experience.
The standard duration of a contract for these programs is typically three years, which can be exited at any time. Some exceptions may apply to applicants who hold a visa or possess a different form of registration, other than General Registration.
All our prevocational programs align to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) Framework for Internship and Postgraduate year 2.

General training
SALHN are committed to the delivery of safe, appropriate, accessible care, from the first 1000 days to the last 1000 days, across our services. General training is a fantastic base for those wanting a holistic hospital experience to form a base for their future specialty. It is one of the most attractive networks for GP trainees given the broad exposure SALHN offers!
This program is highly diverse and has the potential to give you a broad experience in general and specialty rotations. If you have a particular interest in a sub speciality and cannot see the rotation on offer through this program, chat with us, we have an ability to negotiate on your behalf and find the pathway for you.
There are approximately 135 positions on offer each year.
This program has two aims:
- Provide experience in a wide range of clinical setting to support career choice, not matter the speciality you are considering.
- Support foundational experience required for General Practice career pathways.

General Training Clinical and Teaching experience
Rotations are offered across the three major SALHN sites, and a further two rural sites (at Mt Gambier and Victor Harbor). Our Primary Health and Transition services deliver a range of services across the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide, with a focus on providing chronic disease management programs in the community, hospital substitution and avoidance programs targeted at chronic disease and aged care.
In addition, our Southern Mental Health provides a range of integrated services across community and hospital settings addressing mental health concerns in collaboration with non-Government organisations.
From an educational standpoint, our general training program includes the 'Medical Junior Education, Training, and Skills' (Medi-JETS) Program, which consists of weekly tutorial and clinical skills sessions held on Thursday afternoons from 13:00 pm - 14:00 pm. These sessions focus on offering interactive small group teaching for essential practical skills.
All trainees are allocated ‘Simulation’ sessions, led by Medical Education registrars. These interactive, small-group sessions provide hands-on experience in the approach to a broad range of clinical situations. Feedback for these sessions is consistently stellar, and our registrars focus on constructive and supportive debrief after each simulation
In addition, each unit also conducts their own educational program, which typically include ward-based and didactic teaching, journal club, radiology meetings and mortality and morbidity meetings.

Surgical training
This program is designed as a comprehensive surgical training experience that delves into surgery and its various sub-specialties. This program is carefully designed as a stepping stone, offering a pathway into the formal surgical training program with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). It's your chance to discover which surgical sub-specialty aligns best with your interests, bolster your confidence, hone your procedural skills, and establish valuable connections with seasoned experts. We encourage open communication about your goals and learning objectives, ensuring you have access to valuable theatre time to further your surgical journey.

Medical training
This program is designed to offer a comprehensive training experience, tailor-made for future physicians to navigate the complexities of healthcare in the context of an aging population with complex needs. It provides a vital stepping stone towards formal physician training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
Within this program, you'll delve into the multifaceted world of medical practice, where the patients you'll encounter often present with a myriad of health issues. SALHN’s catchment area is characterised by a growing elderly population, presenting unique challenges and learning opportunities.
You'll have the chance to explore the intricacies of managing patients with complex medical conditions, refine your diagnostic and treatment skills, and establish invaluable connections with experienced physicians.
We encourage open dialogue about your career aspirations and learning objectives, ensuring you have access to diverse clinical settings to develop into a compassionate, well-rounded and experienced profession, equipped with the knowledge and skills address the evolving healthcare needs and multifaceted health conditions.
There are approximately 10 positions on offer each year.
You might have already decided to pursue a career as a physician. There is also the option to commence Basic Physician Training (BPT) with RACP, and SALHN typically offers approximately 20 positions each year.

Prevocational Acute and Critical Care Program
This program is unique. This position is designed for aspiring TMOs who are interested in pursuing a career in Emergency or General Medicine.
The program spans a duration of three years. The role offers organised rotations during the initial two years (year 1 and 2), with 6-month exposure in Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) intensive and critical care (ICCU), anaesthesia, and the emergency department. An additionally 6 months, 3-month rotations, will be in General Medicine/Peri-Op and Trauma.
In the final year (year 3), the TMO has the option to select between a 12-month placement in either Emergency Medicine or General Medicine. Rotations may be offered within these placements such as within medical specialities or NHS emergency department.
Typically, this program has an intake once every two years, but it may occur sooner if there are withdrawals. Each intake can accommodate up to 8 participants.
