Program information

Rotation structure

NALHN RN TPPP comprises two six-month rotations. We strive to provide you a minimum of one of your preferred specialties/ward preferences.

Orientation

All new staff are provided a thorough orientation into the organisation. You will attend two days of nursing orientation, followed by one ward/unit-based orientation and induction day.

Supernumerary days

RN TPPPs are allocated a minimum of two supernumerary days at the commencement of each rotation. An additional supernumerary experiential learning day may be offered in the final three months of your TPPP.

Professional development program

You will attend five professional development days that have been designed to align with the SA Health TPPP education framework. In addition to the professional development days, TPPPs will have access to specific TPPP learning and educational opportunities, via either online learning modules or informal TPPP education and debrief sessions.

Preceptorship, peer and clinical support

NALHN has a comprehensive support network so that all early career staff are well supported. All TPPPs will be allocated a preceptor or to a preceptorship team for each rotation. TPPPs will also receive clinical support from clinical buddies and/or team members on a shift-by-shift basis.

In addition to your on-ward support, TPPPs will receive ‘at elbow’ clinical support and education from the TPPP support team.

Networking and debriefing opportunities

NALHN offers regular debriefing and networking opportunities throughout the TPPP. These sessions are facilitated by a member of the TPPP support team and TPPPs from all intakes are encouraged to participate.

Full time / part time opportunities

NALHN TPPP is offered at either a part time or full-time basis. The minimum requirement is at 0.84 (full time equivelant) or four days a week.

Career progression – clinical speciality programs

NALHN offers multiple rotations in several specialty areas. This experience is beneficial if you are considering specialising or undertaking a post graduate specialty program. On completion of your TPPP, specialty programs/ post graduate study is available to successful candidates in various specialty streams.

Annual leave

Annual leave will be accrued according to actual hours worked and is pre-programmed. Accrued annual leave (up to 6 weeks, pro-rata) will be taken within the contract period. Annul leave dates are set/pre-programmed and dates will be made available to successful candidates once allocated to an intake group.

Key benefits

NALHN RN TPPP has been specifically designed to assist the transitioning nurse to develop the knowledge and clinical skills required to fulfil the role of registered nurse. The program is designed for participants to complete learning experiences supported by local facilitators, preceptors, coaches and/or mentors that enable you to develop clinical skills to facilitate the delivery of evidence based, quality, person-centered care. This is a structured program with integrated education and debriefing sessions to assist your development into competent and confident nursing professionals.

NALHN additionally recognises and values the contribution that the transitioning registered nurse makes to the health care team. At NALHN, our purpose is to deliver exceptional health and wellbeing services that enhance the quality of life for our community. You will be part of a team recognising that everyone is an individual with unique needs but also valuable experiences to offer, from the newly graduated registered nurse through to the most experienced senior nurse. We provide a supportive environment where staff members are treated with respect and honesty and are encouraged to strive for their individual goals both professionally and personally.

The NALHN RN TPPP aims to facilitate a supportive environment that will enable the transitioning nurse to:

  • adapt to the role of a professionally practicing registered nurse.
  • consolidate and further develop professional knowledge and skills relevant the role of a registered nurse.
  • build confidence in clinical nursing practice whilst developing positive attributes and attitudes to work.
  • increase awareness and knowledge of the professional responsibilities and boundaries that apply to nursing practice.
  • transition into the role of a registered nurse and progress from a ‘novice’ to that of an ‘advanced beginner’ or ‘competent’, according to Benner’s (1984) Novice to Expert Continuum.
  • minimise any potential or actual “transition shock” (Boychuk Duchscher, 2009) by assisting the transitioning registered nurse with their role adaption within a professional framework.

The NALHN TPPP is underpinned by the Registered nurse standards for practice (Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia 2016).
