About Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network

The Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN), situated on the Traditional Lands of the Kaurna, Ngadjuri, Peramangk and Ngarrindjeri/Ramindjeri people, is unique in encapsulating the land borders of all Adelaide metropolitan local health networks.

The BHFLHN incorporates eleven public hospitals and six Commonwealth funded Residential Aged Care facilities, within multi-purpose health services. Community health services also provide Country Health Connect outreach services across the region, servicing a resident population of over 200,000.

The network is committed to its existing and growing nursing workforce, investing in the learning and development needs of nurses. In response to the increased numbers of TPPP positions offered within the network, BHFLHN has invested in its TPPP Support Team, with dedicated roles of Nurse/Midwife Educator and Clinical Facilitators. In addition, clinical area preceptors are identified and supported to further enhance an optimal transition to professional practice.  BHFLHN also have a number of advanced practice nursing positions including Nurse Practitioner roles, currently being implemented across the region, providing clear pathways in progressive roles within the network. This growth and future development, clearly demonstrate that BHFLHN is an exciting place to work with increasing professional opportunities now and into the future.

Program information

The BHFLHN TPPP is a 12-month program, inclusive of annual leave, and provides opportunities to undertake at least two rotations. The BHFLN TPPP is offered at 0.84 full time equivalent/32 hours per week. Annual leave is pre-allocated within each of the rotations, changes to these allocations may be negotiated with the site Nursing Unit Managers (NUMs).

The BHFLHN TPPP aims to support the newly qualified registered nurse (RN) to develop and consolidate skills and knowledge reflected in high quality professional practice.  The transition program is a contemporary, evidence-based program, developed by rural nurses, and is informed by the practical experience of our workforce.

Differences in location, size and type of healthcare settings make each BHFLHN TPPP experience unique. These opportunities enable development of the skills required for a ‘rural generalist’ RN.  The BHFLHN TPPP incorporates clinical time allocated to enhance learning, supported by an online learning platform.  The TPPP includes a minimum of five supported professional development/study days, in addition to orientation.

Opportunities exist for clinical rotation to specialty areas within the larger health service sites across the network and can be negotiated for TPPPs primarily based at smaller sites. Clinical rotations and associated professional development opportunities are negotiated with individual TPPPs based on individual learning goals and interests, and preferences are accommodated where possible.  Availability of specific specialty placements can be discussed with the relevant site prior to application.

The BHFLHN TPPP is coordinated across the BHFLHN region, with participants across the region coming together regularly for study days, supporting peer networking and collegial support.  Further emotional and wellbeing supports are an important component of the BHFLHN TPPP, with additional opportunities provided for graduates to engage with their wider local community through social, sporting, and community interest groups.

  • At least one day of site/area orientation at the commencement of each clinical rotation; in addition to at least two supernumerary days.
  • Additional supernumerary days are provided in some specialised clinical settings.
  • A minimum of five structured study days throughout the program to provide further education and consolidation of learning.
  • Lifestyle benefits of living and working in some of the most popular tourist destinations in the state, with multiple scenic and leisure opportunities and the ability to engage with local communities through social and sporting groups.

BHFLHN covers a wide geographical footprint, with many differing resources and supports for TPPP participants specific to the site at which you work. Please read through the following information to ensure you are able to effectively meet the requirements of working within this region:

  • Due to the location of sites and limited public transport across the BHFLHN, it is a requirement for TPPP participants to have a current driver’s licence and consistent access to reliable transport.
  • There are further limitations to taxi and drive share services in the smaller rural and remote sites.
  • There is limited accommodation across the region and those participants planning to continue living in metropolitan Adelaide during their program must consider the impacts (financial and physical) of increased travel to and from shift work.
  • Accommodation supports are negotiated for Kangaroo Island rotations.
