Pregnancy outcome statistics
The Pregnancy Outcome Unit undertakes statewide monitoring of pregnancy characteristics and outcomes to identify population groups most at risk and determine preventive interventions. This is undertaken through data collections:
- The Perinatal Statistics Collection is based on midwife notification of South Australian births since 1981. Data is provided to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and contributes to the annual report ‘Australia’s Mothers and Babies’ and other national reports such as those on births to Indigenous women.
- Maternal and perinatal deaths, for review by the Maternal and Perinatal Mortality Committee for quality assurance and monitoring patterns of cause of death, since 1986. An earlier Committee collected maternal death data from 1961 and perinatal death data from 1979.
- Birth defects among South Australian births, since 1981, complemented by data collected for children up to five years of age by the South Australian Birth Defects Register at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, from 1986. South Australian data on birth defects are also provided to the AIHW for national and international surveillance purposes.
- Terminations of pregnancy, from medical practitioner notifications since 1970. These statistics are collated for the Committee appointed to examine and report on abortions notified in South Australia for its annual report to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing.
Each year, the Pregnancy Outcome Unit publishes the Pregnancy Outcome in South Australia report. This report provides annual analyses on pregnancies, obstetric care and the health of newborn babies. Additionally, this report also contains information on abortion rates, home births, numbers of babies born by caesarean section in private and public hospitals and the percentage of women who smoke during pregnancy.
Alongside this the Maternal and Perinatal Mortality in South Australia report is also published. This report summarises and tabulates the annual findings of the reviews by the Maternal and Perinatal Mortality Committee.
For copies of the reports, see below.
Many South Australian Maternal and Perinatal Mortality Committee recommendations have been incorporated into South Australian policies, standards or guidelines. For a complete list of recommendations made by the Committee in previous years, please see the Archived Recommendations document below.
